Seeds of Community is an initiative of Cooper Institute, and has been selected by the Small Change Fund's Atlantic campaign. The Small Change Fund matches funds raised by online crowd-funding, supporting small, grassroots initiatives across Canada, and will match the online donations.Seeds of Community is designed to connect Islanders, build local knowledge of threats to global seed sovereignty and seed security, and build local skills for seed saving, and grassroots networks for sharing seeds.

"We want to connect gardeners and small farmers across P.E.I. to share skills and passion for seed saving," says Josie Baker of Cooper Institute. "Saving and sharing diverse varieties of vegetable seeds makes home food production more accessible, keeps resilience in our local food system, and builds up locally adapted varieties."

The project needs support to get off the ground says Baker.

"Any donation helps, and will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Small Change Fund. We are also looking for volunteers who want to help out, and donations of seeds for the Seed Library."

Donation of home-saved seed can be dropped off at the Charlottetown Farmers Market, a public library, or at 81 Prince Street, Charlottetown, along with the name of the variety, the date, and contact information for the donor.

The aim of the project is to engage community members in saving and sharing seed, to raise awareness about the global issues of food and seed sovereignty, and to establish a seed library. To accomplish this, meetings, workshops and seed-sharing events will be held in different regions of P.E.I.
