As reported at ModernRetail, Walmart's U.S. CEO tells investors on Q2 earnings call that AI is a game changer for e-commerce, claiming generative AI can update product pages 100 times faster than human employees. This innovative technology enables Walmart to improve its product catalogue by processing millions of data points, saving time and manual labour.
Doug McMillon, Walmart president and CEO:
“We’re finding tangible ways to leverage generative AI to improve the customer, member and associate experience. We’re leveraging data and large language models from others and building our own. Without the use of generative AI, this work would have required nearly 100 times the current headcount to complete in the same amount of time.”
Walmart's usage of generative AI has already updated over 850 million product listings, something that would have taken 100 times as much manpower without. According to Walmart's US CEO, John Furner, utilizing AI has allowed the store to enrich the traits and characteristics of hundreds of millions of items in its catalogue, significantly improving the customer experience. He points out that artificial intelligence has dramatically enhanced Walmart's capacity to match product pages to customer intent, making searches and purchasing more efficient both online and in-store.
The practical use o f AI has helped Walmart's e-commerce business grow 22% globally year on year. The significance of artificial intelligence in speeding up workflows is especially significant given Walmart's growing number of (third party) sellers and products on its marketplace. Now 11 countries including Canada will be getting Walmart's new AI assistant tool.
Walmart is experimenting with AI in several parts of the business, including customer-facing shopping assistants and enhancing internal operations. This technology is also expected to play an important part in Walmart's future development into overseas markets, including Canada and India.
Walmart is establishing new standards by automating routine processes and improving the accessibility and accuracy of product information. This allows the organization to remain competitive while increasing operational efficiency.
