How to Prepare for a Long Vacation

Going away on vacation is an exciting time, and if you’re traveling for longer than usual, this is a great opportunity to relax and get away from the busyness of everyday life. However, there are some things to consider if you’re taking a longer trip that you might not have thought about before, especially if you’re only used to going away for a long-weekend or short city break. In this article, we’ll give you our top tips around preparing for a long vacation, so that nothing can catch you off-guard.

Clean Your Home
While it’s easy to get carried away with the excitement of what you’ll be doing while on vacation, and the sights you want to see, part of the preparation for your trip should include making sure that your home is fresh and ready to return to. As part of your checklist, home organization should include:
- Doing any laundry:
Having clean laundry is really important for when you return home, as once you’ve gotten back from the airport you’ll want to change into clean clothes. Don’t leave yourself waiting for the washing machine cycle to finish before you can sit back and relax!
- Taking out any garbage:
There’s nothing worse than returning from vacation to a bad smell, so it’s vital that you remember to take any garbage out before you go away. This will also prevent any pests or bugs trying to get into your leftover food or packaging.
- Clear out your fridge:
In a similar way, clearing out your fridge is another important part of vacation prep. Get rid of any perishable items to prevent them going off and causing a bad odor or a mess that will be frustrating to clean up when you return.
Prepare Any Travel Documentation
Different countries have different requirements for travelers from the US, so it’s important that you prepare any travel documentation well in advance of your vacation to ensure that you have the right information for any state officials. Your US passport and ID will be needed as standard, but for longer vacations you might need to have a visa or travel card that you can present to border force officials – don’t be caught out by being unprepared.
Consider What You’ll Do If You Get Sick
While nobody wants to think about getting sick while on vacation, considering what you’ll do if this happens before you go is a great way to be prepared and have a solid plan of action just in case. Having travel insurance is the most important part of any vacation plan, as if the worst happens and you need help such as medical repatriation services, you’ll be grateful that you’ve got insurance in place, as this will provide mental and financial support during a difficult time.
Planning a long vacation is exciting, and as long as you have dedicated time to preparing your home, documentation and travel insurance before you leave, then you can be confident that you’ll be capable of dealing with whatever this vacation throws at you.
