Vertical AI Offers Highly Specialized Solutions for Specific Industries.  Will It Eat Your Lunch?

Artificial intelligence is game-changer to many sectors of the economy, and one area that is gaining traction is Vertical AI.  Unlike horizontal AI (think AI agents), which provides broad solutions across a wide range of sectors, vertical AI focuses on tackling complex challenges with specific requirements of niche industries with laser-focused accuracy and efficiency.  It's a trend that may disrupt important fintech players, creating new possibilities (and difficulties) for financial services firms.

What is Vertical AI?

Vertical AI is designed for a single industry and can excel over generalist AI (horizontal AI agents that may lack context).  Think of all the times you've prompted AI to do something but were disappointed in the returned output because it wasn't specific enough.  Vertical AI is trained on industry-specific data and knowledge with tasks in mind which leads to optimizing processes, better performance, and deeper insights.  So Vertical AI is considerably more accurate and effective for many applications and is opening up huge opportunities in previously underserved or stagnant sectors like law (EvenUp), logistics, or commercial real estate financing (Lev.co).

Who is at Risk in Fintech?

NFX recently published an article on the verticalization of everything trend which forecasts the unbundling of horizontal B2B SaaS companies like ERPs and CRMs because Vertical AI is providing more customized and effective solutions that can optimize a workflow .  Simply put, horizontal SaaS firms that provide industry-agnostic solutions will be at risk.  Here are some key fintech sectors that look ripe for disruption by vertical AI

  • Vertical AI can transform lending and underwriting by providing accurate risk evaluations based on real-time, industry-specific data. AI systems that specialize in small business loans or real estate financing, for instance, can incorporate seasonal property prices, local economic trends, and specific market circumstances.

  • Wealth Management AI designed for financial advisors may combine customer relationship management (CRM), personalized asset management, and compliance into a single platform that is customized for detailed requirements specific to industries like IT or healthcare. Check out Zocks who are providing financial advisor-specific CRM solutions that adds a ton of value beyond generic and conventional tools.
  • Vertical AI can expedite operations, minimize human error, and automate industry specific regulatory checks to simplify procedures. Compliance platforms such as Norm.AI can surpass horizontal KYC/AML solutions by providing more deeper industry specific information.
  • Handling specific payment and fraud detection tasks that are unique for a specific sector can be too difficult for horizontal payment processors. Vertical AI providers can offer specific fraud detection algorithms that are more suitable for niche markets like freelance marketplaces or cross-border logistics.

Outlook

Vertical AI solutions provide levels of specialization that horizontal SaaS platforms cannot match. From loans to payments and risk management, fintech companies must embrace this new wave of technology or risk falling behind.

To remain competitive in the future, established fintech businesses may need to acquire vertical AI platforms or invest in creating industry-specific AI skills themselves.
