Slack Pivots From Messaging Platform to AI-driven 'Work Operating System'

Salesforce acquired Slack in July 2021 for a whopping $27.7 billion.  Now, as reported on Techrunch, they are transforming Slack into an AI Agent platform that integrates advanced workflow tools from Salesforce's own 'Agentforce' and integrations from Adobe and Anthropic among others to come.  So these agents will be automating tasks, enhancing productivity, and streamlining work directly within Slack.  The challenge is, do users really want it?

Denise Dresser, CEO Slack:

“AI is showing us a new way to experience technology which is very organic to Slack: it’s conversational, you’re surfacing information, and you’re taking action right in the flow of work.  Slack is not simply a work messaging platform, but rather a digital workplace or work OS that “brings all your people and processes together.”

Benefits of Slack's AI Pivot

Slack enhances productivity by automating tasks and highlighting important information to facilitate quicker decision making and more efficient workflows in line, with enterprise requirements.

By having AI bots integrated into Slack for real time analysis and information, users can evaluate business data seamlessly.  This saves time and ramps up insights which helps companies respond to their customers smarter and quicker.

Users can communicate with AI assistants using everyday conversational language to give instructions and access information more naturally.  By integrating top AI tools from industry leaders like Adobe, Anthropic and it's own Agentforce in one platform, users will save time in a one-stop shop approach and avoid having to flip between multiple platforms.

Potential Hiccups

Some users depend on Slack for solely messaging, so the right pricing strategy will affect adoption of the new AI agent hub.

Slack already had a prompt injection attack last month and there was a lot of controversy around Slack's data usage for AI training policies.  By incorporating AI features, data and privacy issues become increasingly important. Businesses and users may be concerned about how their data is being utilized and will want assurance that their interactions on Slack are not being exploited for AI training or worse.

Not all Slack users will want or even need AI features.  AI features like content creation and advanced analysis may overwhelm them.

Outlook

The success (or failure) of Slack's pivot to an AI Agent Hub will depend on whether or not AI tools become essential for daily workflows and how much more they are willing to pay for it.
