On December 18 2025, Spendsafe launched a full service financial education platform for youth in Canada. The product combines financial education tools with a reloadable prepaid Mastercard program delivered through regulated Canadian payments partners.
The platform is built for children and teens aged 6 to 18. It provides a mobile app experience where young users can track spending, set savings goals, and learn money concepts as they use funds in real time. Parents retain control through features that include balance loading, spending limits, transaction visibility, and account oversight, while also helping children prepare for long-term goals through tools such as an education savings plan.
The launch arrives at a time when access to practical money education is lagging behind digital participation. The platform connects learning to everyday activity through a secure prepaid card, a connected mobile app, and a personalized digital coach that adapts as the child grows. Parents can assign chore based allowances, set financial goals, and guide spending in real time within a structured environment.According to the release:
Spendsafe operates its payments program through a structured partner stack. Peoples Trust Company acts as the prepaid card issuer, Berkeley Payments provides program management, and Mastercard supplies the acceptance network. This design places the product inside existing Canadian payments and compliance frameworks rather than outside them.
Vasanth Ratna, CEO and Founder of Spendsafe:
"Financial confidence isn't built overnight. It's developed through small, meaningful decisions made over time. Spendsafe gives families a smarter, safer way to raise financially independent children. With Mastercard as our network provider, we're proud to deliver a platform that brings together payment security, behavioral learning, and a clear path to lifelong financial wellbeing."
Spendsafe operates independently while relying on licensed partners to handle regulated functions such as card issuance and payment processing. The company has also attracted external backing. In November 2025, Malar Group announced a strategic investment in Spendsafe to support product development and expansion. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Talking Point
Spendsafe places financial education inside live payment behaviour. If habits form through daily use rather than instruction alone, will embedded learning models earn stronger long term engagement than classroom based approaches?
The launch highlights how prepaid payments, parental controls, and education tools continue to converge into single consumer products. Execution now depends on adoption, trust, and ease of use for families managing real money.
