On October 22, 2024, the Canadian government announced $300 million in funding to help small to medium sized businesses (SMEs) get a foothold in AI. The funding is part of the $2.4 billion AI investment discussed in the 2024 federal budget and includes two new programs focused on AI access and growth for SMEs.
The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry:
“Small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of Canada’s AI ecosystem. The investments announced today are designed to serve as a catalyst for quicker AI adoption by this vital section of the economy, be a source of significant Canadian innovation, and enhance productivity and exports. The government will build on this with Canada’s first sovereign compute strategy that will reflect the voices of Canadians from coast to coast to coast.”
Recognizing that SMEs face unique challenges in funding and tech adoption, the government has developed two primary programs to help smaller companies integrate AI into their operations (boosting their ability to compete and making them more productive) and nurturing the next wave of AI innovation.
Worth noting that the remaining $2 billion in fresh funding support will be allocated to the AI Compute Access Fund and the Canadian AI Sovereign Compute Strategy to provide large scale AI projects with access to the necessary processing power without having to rely on international resources.
To ensure responsible AI use, the government is also planning to set up an AI Safety Institute with an initial $50 million to protect against misuse and align with responsible tech and data management practices. From June to September 2024, the government launched a public consultation on AI infrastructure to inform of which over 1000 AI stakeholders from the public and businesses responded.
With dedicated resources and a commitment to ethical and responsible AI, this funding will help SMEs overcome the challenges in accessing and integrating AI to give companies a productivity and competitive boost in the global arena. Having said that, while this new funding is significant, many experts believe that more commitment from Canada's private sector will be essential to compete globally and achieve any measurable long term success.
