On Jan 23, 2025, OpenAI launched a new tool called Operator, an advanced AI agent that can autonomously perform web-based tasks. It's currently in research preview and available to ChatGPT Pro users in the United States for $200 per month, with broader access coming to targeted businesses and individuals in the near future. Operator goes beyond just reminding you to buy groceries, it can handle the entire process from selecting items to checking out on your behalf without pressing a single button (it may have follow-up questions for your guidance). It's stirring up imaginations across tech and finance sectors while also raising important new questions around privacy and AI dependency. Let's take a look.
Operator’s standout feature is its ability to autonomously navigate and interact with websites and applications. OpenAI is calling this 'Computer Using Agent' or CUA model for short, which combines GPT4s ability to reason and apply logic together with vision. The latter allows it to see, analyze and interact with website buttons, menus, forms etc to perform tasks just like a person would who is using a website to perform a function. Can it for example, log into an expense management platform, upload a series of documents, and submit reports all on its own (without a human sitting at the keyboard) - the answer is yes.
Let's have a look at a few more examples how Operator could work for fintech businesses. Companies can embed Operator into services to create a wide range of user experiences:
It can work for individuals too, more like a virtual assistant and can increase productivity and free up time. Over time, Operator will seemingly integrate across all your apps and platforms, making everyday tasks more manageable.
The benefits are pretty outstanding for both companies and consumers. For businesses, they can use technology to scale operations for growth while simultaneously lowering operational costs through task automation. For individuals, Operator can manage tasks saving you time and provide personalized services like an expert virtual assistant than works 24/7. Important to realize that there are limitations with this tech still in it's infancy, so the model is trained to sometimes go back to the user for clarity or more inputs to complete a decision outcome or task, especially for complex workflows.
On the risks side, privacy and data security are top concerns, even with built in safeguards. AI can also make mistakes which can be horrible if used in a critical application. There's also the risk of 'beast mode' where Operator makes wrong decisions and 'takes over' supervised tasks without requiring human input (NB: users are allowed to 'take control' at anytime). It's also very easy to understand how Operator might reduce the need for administrative assistant roles and other jobs that require repetitive tasks. Some AI experts are concerned about relying on AI for too many tasks, which risks losing human capabilities for oversight of important job functions.
The fact that AI is becoming a more active participant by pairing advanced reasoning with visual and interactive capabilities opens up huge new possibilities to automate tasks for businesses and consumers alike. While incredibly exciting, innovators and users need to approach such tech ethically and apply robust security if adoption is important to longer term success. Not everyone can afford USD $200 a month at its current price, so need to make sure flavours of this tech are accessible.
