Africa’s Fintech Bridge Is Open for Investment

Canada-Africa | June 10, 2025

CAFS Aug 5 8, 2025 Program Overview

Image courtesy of the Canada-Africa Fintech Summit, Aug 5-8, 2025 | Toronto

With Aid Declining, Global Capital is Key to Scaling Africa’s Fintech Future

Foreign aid to Africa is in rapid retreat but this is not the end of growth. It is the beginning of a new investment cycle, one that's not built on charity but on returns. As Mo Ibrahim recently wrote in the Financial Times:

"Africa’s future will depend on capital raised and deployed through smarter governance, stronger ecosystems, and financial innovation."

Fintech is driving growth in digital payments, lending, and cross-border services from Cairo to Cape Town. Now, global and diaspora investors are stepping up to high growth opportunities by backing key ventures changing the future of African finance.

A New Era From Aid to Capital

Mo Ibrahim points out that the long decline in international development assistance has reached a critical point. Countries can no longer rely on donor budgets to fund health, infrastructure, or economic growth. He sees this as a call to action.

See:  Fintech Grows 3x Faster, 97% of Market Still Untapped

Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chair of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation:

“Africans should not mourn the end of international aid. Now is the time to look inside our own borders and make African-led investment the cornerstone of African development.”

So what does this turning point actually mean?  For African governments and businesses, it means doubling down on transparency and efficient capital deployment. For global investors, it is an entry point into a rising market with 1.4 billion consumers, one of the world’s fastest growing digital economies, and with real demand for services.  And for global governments including Canada, its time to develop and mobilize an African strategy.

Governance Matters but So Does Capital

To unlock investment, licensing needs to be transparent, policy clear, and legal trust required.  But even the best regulated and efficient fintech markets can't grow without capital.  Africa's fintech sector is maturing, and the next phase will be defined by the scale and speed of investment into the continent.

In 2024, African start‑ups raised US $3.2 billion in equity and debt funding.  Financial tech companies represented about 60% of the total equity funding (US $1.3–1.4 billion), and 47% of all startup funding, with a 16% increase in deal volumes despite global headwinds .

See:  Digital Export Trends and Global Trade Fintech Opportunities

African fintech firms have proven they can scale, and many now require structured growth capital to extend beyond major metro financial hubs.  This is where hybrid models are gaining ground.

Case: Flutterwave and the Hybrid Capital Model

Flutterwave, one of Africa’s most prominent fintechs, was co-founded by Nigerian entrepreneurs with deep local ties but its rise to a $3 billion post series D valuation was powered by a hybrid of diaspora and global capital.

Backed by firms like Tiger Global, Visa Ventures, and B Capital, Flutterwave also benefited from early African and diaspora networks. Co-founder Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, who now runs Future Africa, helped establish a model of reinvesting diaspora wealth into African ventures.

This combination of local knowledge and global capital is the emerging model. Diaspora fund managers, global venture capital firms, development finance institutions, and regional investors are increasingly working together to back companies with global ambitions and capacity to scale.

Canada-Africa Fintech Sumit (CAFS) August 5-8, 2025 | Toronto

Africa is not waiting; they are expanding and forming strategic fintech partnerships, and its fintech leaders are already building the future of digital finance. What they need now is capital to scale. CAFS provides the connection point between Canadian and African fintech opportunities.

See:  Canada Launches First Global Africa Strategy

CAFS inaugural summit aims to connect African and Canadian fintech innovators, leaders, start-ups, digital finance and trade experts, investors, partners and policymakers to unlock and diversify cross-border opportunities, scalable fintech solutions, investment, and drive inclusive economic growth.

Web Summit 2025: Where AI, Finance & Values Collide

Tech Ecosystem | June 6, 2025

Technology With Purpose Drives Fintech, AI, and Brand strategy in Vancouver

Web Summit Vancouver 2025 ran from May 27-30 2025 at the Vancouver Convention Centre attracting 15 727 attendees and with 1 108 startups from 117 countries, creating an electric atmosphere of discovery and deal making. Exhibiting startups spanned innovations in AI and machine learning, fintech and financial services, healthtech and wellness, and sustainability and cleantech.

See:  Google Veo 3 Brings New Tools for Fintech Teams

Fintech solutions ranged from digital banking apps to blockchain payment rails, with Koho introducing a new international transfer service at the event. Founders pitched ideas, investors scouted opportunities, and conversations ranged from regulation to real-time fraud detection, confirming Canada’s growing role in global fintech innovation.

Select Takeaways

1. Consumer Trust and Brand Authenticity

In the “Brands in Uncertain Times” session, Angus Reid of Angus Reid Group shared that nearly 50% of Canadians “vote at the cash register” by choosing brands aligned with their values. FCB Global CEO Tyler Turnbull added that Canadian consumers will pay 20-30% more for products produced and sourced in Canada, the premium on authenticity. For fintech companies, transparent fee structures and clear brand messaging are key to building consumer trust and loyalty.

2. AI Infrastructure Accelerates Fintech Innovation

AI dominated most panels, hallway discussions, and featured prominently across multiple stages. Sunny Madra, COO of Groq, announced Groq is now the exclusive inference provider for Bell Canada’s sovereign AI network, including two new data centres in British Columbia designed to bring AI processing closer to Canadian users. This new AI infrastructure will benefit fintech startups seeking access to low-latency, secure AI inference capabilities for real-time applications like fraud detection and  compliance.

3. Sustainability and ESG Integration in Tech

Sustainability and cleantech stood out alongside AI. Sessions highlighted how technology is driving environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, such as using AI to identify and price climate risks. Partners like OVHcloud showcased energy efficient cloud offerings, illustrating how infrastructure providers integrate ESG criteria into their services. For fintechs, embedding ESG considerations into product design and investment decisions is key for long term success.  Not to mention the Competition Bureau's final rules on greenwashing that companies need to comply with.

4. Fintech Innovations and Cross-Border Payments

Financial technologies and services was one of the top represented verticals, with companies demoing solutions from digital banking apps and blockchain payment rails to regtech platforms. Toronto-based challenger bank Koho introduced its international money transfer service to over 190 countries, promising most transfers would arrive within 30 minutes during beta. By addressing opaque rates and slow settlement times, Koho’s launch shows how fintechs who listen to consumer issues can earn trust and turn these insights into new products/services that resonate with both Canadian and global markets.

5. Inclusive Entrepreneurship and Diverse Teams

44% of startups at Web Summit Vancouver were founded or co-founded by women. Beyond fintech, local firms such as Doubl, Revol Cares, and Aruna Revolution showcased solutions for women’s health and wellness.

See:  Where the Gaps Are: Fintech Insights from FCA Data

Within financial services, fintech teams highlighted embedded credit services for underbanked populations and regtech platforms that serve diverse small-business owners.  It's really diverse founding teams that drive not just inclusive entrepreneurship but solutions that resonate with underserved markets, strengthening innovation overall.

Closing Thought

Technology is no longer judged only by what it can do, but by who it includes, what it protects, and how it earns trust. For fintechs and founders alike, this is the real edge of innovation and frontier.

SEC to Host Policy Roundtable with DeFi Builders

DeFi Policy | June 5, 2025

SEC Invites DeFi Builders and Experts to Discuss Future Policy

On June 9, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is hosting a policy roundtable titled DeFi and the American Spirit to have an open and structured policy dialogue with decentralized finance developers, innovators, and legal experts alongside SEC legal and regulatory voices.  The roundtable is part of the SEC's Crypto Task Force's ongoing series of crypto asset regulation events.

See: DeFi Technologies Begins Nasdaq Trading in Global Expansion

These gatherings are not 'hearings', nor are they 'policy announcements' but rather conversations with people who have actually built defi systems, in fact many who have publicly challenged the SEC's approach.  It’s a live forum where ideas about risk, innovation, and policy design can be tested in real time.  So in that way, it's a rare and important event for DeFi in the U.S. and fintechs watching from other jurisdictions like Canada.

Speakers Set the Tone

The speaker lineup is a mix of founders, researchers, lawyers, and advocates who all have somewhat different views on how DeFi should work and be handled from a regulatory and practical perspective.

Erik Voorhees, founder of ShapeShift (and now Venice AI) is known for arguing that decentralized tools and open-source software should not be regulated like traditional financial intermediaries. His participation ensures that the case for user autonomy and protocol neutrality will be represented without compromise.

Michael Mosier, former acting director of FinCEN who founded Arktouros is focused on financial crime and compliance.  He's likely to advocate for more robust frameworks for identifying illegal flows through permissionless systems. He'll ensure that AML and systemic risk questions are part of the core conversation.

See:  Takeaways from the SEC’s Crypto Custody Roundtable

Rebecca Rettig, general counsel at Jito Labs and formerly with Polygon, brings first-hand experience in understanding protocol development and legal structure, and is well positioned to bring up solutions that don’t rely on full centralization, such as voluntary disclosures or protocol guardrails.

Kevin Werbach, a professor at Wharton, has spent years studying how decentralized systems intersect with regulation. He tends to advocate for layered frameworks that separate software, governance, and commercial activity to provide a way to regulate outcomes without halting innovation.

There are several other panelists including Jill Gunter (Espresso Systems), Peter Van Valkenburgh (Coin Center), Omid Malekan (Columbia Business School), Gabe Shapiro (MetaLeX), and others who will no doubt have ample to contribute in helping the SEC understand as well as framing the policy of decentralized systems.

It’s a great cross-section of people trying to answer the same question from different angles: how should decentralized finance be understood and governed?

What Might Emerge From the Discussion

Here are some core questions that may come up during the discussions:

See:  UK Publishes Draft Rules for Crypto Regulation

  • Whether front-end operators or governance token holders can be held responsible for protocol-level activity
  • Whether full KYC/AML is even feasible in trustless systems, or whether alternative risk controls could satisfy regulatory goals
  • Whether decentralized protocols should have a path to safe harbour status if they meet transparency or auditability benchmarks
  • How to separate expressive code from financial intermediation in a way that holds up in court

At the end of the day, the SEC should be commended for their willingness to engage with key foundational questions in effort to both understand at a deeper level, as well as inform future policy making.  Leaps and bounds better than regulate by enforcement under the SEC's ex-Chair, Gary Gensler and a commission that would rather assume that every DeFi project is either a rug-pull or disguised as a securities platform.

Implications for Canadian Fintech

If the roundtable opens the door to more flexible or fit-for-purpose regulation, Canadian regulators will face growing calls to follow suit.  It also offers Canadian founders a window into how U.S. regulators are thinking, what they are worried about, what they may be willing to tolerate, and where they are open to compromise.  It's clear proof that the SEC is finally recognizing that DeFi isn't going away and that series policy design needs inputs from the people building it.
